This Blog Post Brought to You by CIO

WELL that was fast and effective.

The New Family Dad actually has free time to compose a blog post in the middle of the day because the Twins are asleep. The credit goes to CIO, or cry it out sleep training.

At the urging of an experienced mother, Dad read Weissbluth's Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and Ferber's Solve Your Childs Sleep Problems. They then began to seriously sleep train EJ on Friday and Liesel Sunday.

EJ's first session lasted 40 minutes. That was hard. Today Dad put him down and it lasted 20 seconds. Liesel is not there yet, but she will be.

Interestingly, this study found no ill emotional or psychological effects of sleep training but no long term benefits either. But the short term benefits are worthwhile to Dad. Happy, well rested kids that readily engage the world.

What was your experience? Did you sleep train? If so, what method did you use? How long did it take? Where there any relapses?

[Update 9/12/12] Donna N. e-mails, "I was wondering if you heard of the Shishing and Shushing method for children after reading that latest blog of Mr. James?  My brother in law swore by it to “shish” and “shush” them to sleep.  We laughed watching him do it.  It was hysterical!"

Dad has not heard of it and a Google search didn't seem to turn up anything relevant. Where did he learn of it? Anyone familiar with this?

  1. There are the 5 S's in the book Happiest Baby on the Block. They are swaddle, side lying, sway, shush, and suck. Maybe he got it from there? It is used to calm babies but not a method of sleep training.
