What is Geniunely Surprising About This is...

...that the person that passed this along thought the NF Dad would find it surprising. He did not.

Christine Carter on kid's chores

The venom spewed at her in the comments at the site originally sent to Dad is truly aweful.

He gets that different parents have different parenting styles and there are no one-size-fits-all solutions. But then again, he has also observed a very close correlation between well behaved, responsible, mature children and the structure their parents impose on them. Though he has not surveyed those children, he would be easily persuaded that they are happier and better socially adjusted than their peers.

All kids benefit from structure and responsibility. Some (like Dad when he was 12) need more of it, others less. But left on their own, children will not achieve their optimal potential.

And that is acceptable for some parents and their children. And Dad is okay with that.
